Heroes Welcome Back Fans With Landslide Victory Over Giants

The Kiwoom Heroes coasted to an 8-1 victory over the Lotte Giants on Sunday, stopping the Giants from getting a sweep in the three-game series. The win saw an early rally put the Heroes ahead by five, allowing the team to coast for the rest of the game.

Crowds, Albeit Small, Are Back

Sunday was the first day of the season which saw a live audience at KBO games, as a small crowd was accepted into the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, South Korea. The heavily spaced out crowd left the majority of the seats in the stadium vacant.

For the first time this year, cheers and chants done by the MC and cheerleaders at KBO games were met with claps. A small, spaced out amount, but an audible change nonetheless. The rules around current COVID-19 etiquette at the stadium prevented fans from belting out their team’s chant songs for now.

Heroes Get Five Off of Seo

The first inning was a troubling one for Giants starter Seo Jun-won, who gave up five runs in the time period.

Park Byung-ho brought home the first run, getting a hit that scored Kim Hye-sung. The second run came off the bat of Park Dong-won, although a call at third jeopardized the play.

The rally was threatened early on, as a supposed third out against Park Byung-ho at third base was called. After the umpires deliberated about the puzzling play on third base, it was decided he was in fact safe, validating the run scored in the play and continuing the inning.

The runs continued, with Jeon Byung-woo bringing home two and Park Joo-hong bringing in a final to make the game 5-0. To finish the batting order within the inning, ninth-slot batter Park Joon-tae grounded out.

Starter Seo didn’t give up any more runs for the rest of his performance, although he was given the hook early, being replaced in the fourth inning.

Heroes Add Extra Runs Later

More runs came later in the game for the Heroes, including a hit from Park in the fifth, who scored the first run for of the game for the Heroes earlier. In the seventh, he picked up his third RBI of the game with another hit. Kim ha-seong added to the tally in the eighth off of a fielder’s choice play.

While the Giants lost, they avoided a shutout on the scoreboard after An Chi-hong took home Dixon Machado in the sixth inning.

The Heroes had a large cast of pitchers appearing, as starter Kim Jae-woong only played two-and-a-third innings before being taken out. The game was the first starting pitcher appearance for Kim in the KBO. Coming in after him was Yang Hyun, who was given his fifth win of the season for the innings he pitched.

Giants To Head Back Home

The game saw the Heroes finish their week on a good note, after three losses and two cancelled games made for a rough week for the team before. The team will start their next week of play against the Doosan Bears, moving on to a weekend series versus the Samsung Lions after.

With their long road trip complete, the Giants will head back home on Tuesday to open a series against the NC Dinos. Staying at home, the team will play the Kia Tigers after.

Giants Get Deciding Runs Over Heroes Late In Starter’s Appearance

The Kiwoom Heroes cracked first in a close pitching battle against the Lotte Giants, losing 6-3 at home on Saturday. The game was the second straight win for the Giants at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, South Korea.

Starting pitchers Dan Straily and Han Hyun-hee played well, although it was the Giants who capitalized on Han late in his stint to get their game-winning runs.

Straily Helps Giants Through Majority of Game

It was a strong performance on the mound by Dan Straily which helped the Giants on the defence. Playing seven innings, Straily allowed only two hits and two walks while earning eight strikeouts.

Giants Get Ahead Against The End of Han’s Showing

The Giants scored the first run of the game in the fifth inning, as Lee Dae-ho got home while the Heroes tried and failed to get the third out at first base. An Chi-hong beat the throw to first, picking up an RBI on the play.

Cracks started to show late in the performance for Heroes starting pitcher Han Hyun-hee. The seventh inning saw the end of his performance, as he was pulled following a hit from Jung Hoon that scored two runs.

Reliever Jo Duk-gil came in, with hits from Son Ah-seop and Jeon Jun-woo scoring three more runs in total during his time. Jo finished the inning, although the Giants had gained a 6-0 lead at that point.

In the end, a push in the late innings gave the Wyverns the win. Bringing the lead to within a run, a home run was hit by Lee Hyun-seok in the eighth inning against Koo Seung-min tied up the game.

The game-ending two-run home run hit in the ninth came against Kim Won-joong, giving the closer his first loss of the season through 24 appearances.

The sole run against Straily came late in his performance, as a home run was hit by Koo Ja-wook in the sixth inning.

The win was Straily’s third-straight for him, with earlier performances in the month seeing him go deeper into games without allowing any runs. His 2020 record in the KBO is currently 4-2 with a 2.03 ERA, which is the third lowest in the league.

Han Continues Hot Streak

The Giants gained a short lead in the third after a hit from Han Dong-hee scored two runs. This continued the hot streak that Han has been on lately, as the third baseman has scored 15 RBIs in his last seven games.

Lions Gain 10-Run Lead

While it was the Giants who scored first, the Lions answered back with force, scoring 12 runs over four innings. It started in the third with a single from Lee Won-seok that took two runners home.

The scoring continued an inning later, with Kim Ji-chan batting home another two runs. After giving up four runs, Seo Jun-won was taken out of the game amid the fourth inning. Reliever Jung Tae-seung came in, allowing one more run off of a hit from Koo Ja-wook before the inning ended.

The Giants finally answered back in the seventh by scoring three runs. A hit from Dixon Machado was the first, which took home two runners. Kim Dae-woo pitched at the start of the sixth inning for the Giants but was pulled following a few batters due to hurting a leg after landing awkwardly during a pitch.

An explosive fifth inning that saw a two-run hit from Heo Jeong-hyeop and a three-run home run from Jeon Byung-woo helped give the Kiwoom Heroes a 7-4 win over the NC Dinos. Creeping up on first place in the KBO, the Heroes are now four games behind the top-ranked Dinos.

A three-run home run from Choi Hyung-woo took back the lead for the Kia Tigers in the ninth, as the team went on to beat the Samsung Lions 5-2.

It was a successful day at the park for the Doosan Bears, who cruised to a 7-2 victory over the SK Wyverns after a high scoring trio of innings midway through.

Scoring early on often, the Hanhwa Eagles quickly mounted a lead that the KT Wiz couldn’t climb out of, winning 7-3.
