Choi Ji-hoon Takes Spotlight In Wyverns Win Over Giants

The SK Wyverns won a low-scoring game on Saturday, defeating the Lotte Giants 2-1. The victory, their third-in-a-row, came at their home park, the Incheon SK Happy Dream Stadium in Incheon, South Korea.

The biggest name in the game was Wyverns player Choi Ji-hoon, the right fielder who was involved in numerous key plays in the game. Scoring a run and being driven home in the other scoring play for the team, Choi also showed his defensive ability by robbing a run for the final out of the game.

Wyverns Score Two Runs

The first run for the Wyverns came early, as a wild pitch allowed Choi to score from third base.

Fast-forwarding to the seventh inning, Choi was able to drive home a runner off of a hit to give the Wyverns their second run. While it was reliever Kim Dae-woo at the mound, the run was scored against starter Adrian Sampson, who had given up a hit to runner Ko Jong-wook earlier in the inning.

Long, Enduring Stint For Sampson Ends In Loss

Sampson’s near-seven-inning performance gave him the loss for the game. Throwing 111 pitches, the most he has thrown in a 2020 appearance, he allowed four hits and three walks while picking up two strikeouts. His 2020 record is now 5-9.

Wyverns starter Lee Geon-wook had a low-stress night on the mound, pitching six innings without giving up a run. The win evened his 2020 record at 6-6.

Late Push From Giants Stopped

The sole run for the Giants was earned in the eighth inning, as a sacrifice fly ball from Jeon Jun-woo took a runner home. The run was scored against Lee Tae-yang, who was able to finish the inning.

The game ended in a dramatic fashion that nearly saw the Giants take the lead. The third out of the inning was a near three-run home run from Kim Joon-tae, although Wyverns right fielder Choi was able to snag it on the warning track. If not caught, the ball was to have likely been a home run.

Afternoon Baseball Scheduled For Sunday

The Wyverns are set to finish their week on Sunday with an afternoon game against the Giants. The first pitch for Sunday’s games is scheduled for 2:00PM KST (1:00AM EDT).
