A back-and-forth game saw late runs be the deciding factor for the Lotte Giants, who defeated the KT Wiz 10-9 on Tuesday. The game kicked off a three-game series hosted by the Giants at the Sajik Baseball Stadium in Busan, South Korea.
The game moved the winning streak for the Giants to five-straight games, the longest among the 10 KBO teams currently.
Late Hits Put Giants Ahead
The Giants took the lead late in the game, scoring runs in the seventh and eighth that gave them a lead. The first of the two runs came off of a hit from Jeon Jun-woo that scored a run. The run came against Yoo Woon-sang, who was handed the loss for the game for his short performance.
An insurance run came in the eighth inning, as Kim Joon-tae batted home a runner.
The Wiz scored one run late, with a fielder’s choice play allowing a runner to reach home. Giants closer Kim Won-joong was able to finish the inning and be awarded the save.
Earlier in the game, the Giants had their lead taken from them after a high-scoring sixth inning. The team was able to battle back within the inning to tie the game up.
Hectic Sixth Inning Sees Wiz Take Lead
A run of scoring plays in the sixth inning gave the Wiz a short lead over the Giants. The team was able to put down five runs in the frame. Park Kyung-soo kicked off the scoring, hitting a solo home run at the top of the inning.
After facing four batters, pitcher Park Jin-hyung was pulled from play. Choi Jun-yong came in for the Giants next, being able to finish the inning on the mound.
Following a hit from Mel Rojas Jr. that scored two runs, Kang Baek-ho scored two more by hitting a two-run home run.
Giants Climb Up To 8-8 Score
The Giants were able to tie the game up later in the inning. The inning had four different scoring plays and took three pitchers, including the end of starting pitcher Odrisamer Despaigne’s stint.
Following hits from Jeon Jun-woo and Son Ah-seop that took home a run each, Ju Kwon walked two more batters before being pulled from the game.
Reliever Yoo Won-sang finished the inning, although two more runs came after a walk forced one home and a fielding error allowed another.
Giants Took Lead Earlier
A series of runs put the Giants ahead in the first third of the game.
The Giants scored their first two runs in the first inning, with hits from Son Ah-seop and Lee Dae-ho both drove home a run.
The Wiz shortened the lead to one run in the second inning, as a hit from Jang Sung-woo took a runner home.
Moving the score to 4-1, Han Dong-hee scored a two-run home run in the bottom of the second for the Giants.
The Wiz scored two runs in the fifth inning, bringing the score to a closer 4-3 and ending the outing for Giants starter Park Se-woong. After both Bae Jeong-dae and Jo Yong-ho batted home runs, Park was able to finish the inning before being taken out of play.
Giants Now Tied For Sixth With Tigers, Three Games Behind Wild Card
Now with 11 games left in the season, the Giants find themselves in a tight bid for the wild card spot in the KBO. With a record of 64-58-1, the team is tied for sixth with the Kia Tigers. Both teams are three games behind the wild card LG Twins, who have a record of 68-56-3.
The Giants will host the Wiz two more times during the mid-week. Wednesday’s game is scheduled for 6:30PM KST (5:30AM EDT).

Needing 12 innings to find a winner, a solo home run by Lee Sung-gyu in the 12th inning gave the Samsung Lions a 3-2 win over the LG Twins. The game saw veteran player Park Yong-taik score a hit in the ninth inning, making him the first KBO player to attain 2,500 career hits.
A low-scoring contest saw the Hanhwa Eagles defeat the Kia Tigers 3-2. Having lost the game, the Tigers are now tied with the Giants for sixth in the league.
Heo Jeong-hyeop broke a tie late for his team, scoring a run with a hit to give the Kiwoom Heroes a 2-1 win against the top-ranked NC Dinos.
Earning their fourth-straight win, the Doosan Bears picked up a 9-4 victory over the SK Wyverns.
