Summer 2021 Portfolio

Hi! My name is Jack Wannan. I’m a 20-year-old journalist from Toronto, Canada. I am currently studying at X University in downtown Toronto and am in search of work within the field. This quick portfolio will run down my experience in reporting and some of the work I feel I am the strongest at.

Experience

I have been publishing written content online since 2016 and have covered a wide range of topics. While I mainly write about MMA at the moment, I also have experience in covering topics ranging from sports to entertainment to current issues.

I am currently in my second year of a four year undergraduate program at X University for journalism.

Bylines: The Eyeopener, X Folio, lwos.life, LastWordonMotorsport, MMA-Prospects and more.

Hard News/Content Aggregation

I have great experience with hard news writing and content aggregation. I’m focused on not only being able to manage content in a way that can make a site a one-stop hub for a topic, but also doing so in a way that upholds fairness and accuracy in reporting.

I have managed MMA news site Knockdown News for over a year, aiming to make the site a fair representation of all the top MMA news stories. Since the MMA scene returned amid the pandemic in May of 2020, the site has been on top of all the recent stories in the sport. It has been the host to all stories and have also broken stories within the sport.

The site has covered stories vary from fight announcements (See: Edmen Shahbazyan To Make Return Against Jack Hermansson At UFC 262) to business within the sport (See: Endeavor Holding Groups Pursues UFC Buyout Ahead of IPO Filing)

Live/Rolling Content

I take pride in the ability to cover ongoing events, breaking tidbits of information as they transpire. I have made “Live Coverage” articles a cornerstone of content on Knockdown News, doing 1-4 of them every week. The articles have an adjustable format that provides viewers with quick and interactive information about events as they happen.

The style of article has been used for big and small events (as seen below). While this unique style has only been utilized for MMA, I feel it easily be transformed to fit any sport or event in general.

Examples:

UFC 263: Adesanya vs. Vettori 2 Live Coverage

CFFC 96: Jones vs. Cleveland Live Coverage

Interviews

In what is some of my proudest work, I have been frequently doing interviews in recent years. These interviews are often turned into full-length articles that reach 600 words or more. My interviews have varied from speaking with athletes, fans and experts in medical fields.

Opinion/Analysis Content

I have dipped my toes in op-ed styles of articles in the past. Many articles that are opinion based are data based: they use statistics to help reach a conclusion regarding an issue. This can be seen in the first two examples listed. However, articles like the third example just go off pure opinion on a situation.

Newsletter Content

Like many journalists in recent years, I have tested the waters of providing information through a newsletter format. In January I launched the “Knockdown Daily,” an email newsletter that rounds up the top MMA stories every morning. I have utilized web service Substack to make the newsletter and am now experienced with their system.

The reception to the newsletter has been strong and the plan is to continue utilizing it.

Social Media

I have experience managing Twitter accounts. I currently run the recently-launched @Knockdownnews Twitter page, and I help out with the @MMAProspectscom account as well.

So… What now?

I hope the examples of work listed above are the type of reporting you would want to in your publication or website. I am open to any offers in relation to work, so please do not hesitate to contact me:
